On Friday I sprained my foot and for me this really did put a monkey wrench in all of the things that I do. I'm a dance teacher as well as a freelance dancer working with a Baltimore based African dance company so not moving slows down my ability to effectively do my job. Plus I had a meeting & a party to attend this weekend, soccer practice for my son, & the list goes on & on. So imagine how I might have felt having to take a break from all of this! Well to many people around me, I was surprisingly happy and it definitely was showing!
I know if this would have happened to me years ago, my younger self would have been extremely stressed out & would not have been able to sit still while trying to recover. At that time it was hard for me to just sit with myself & enjoy my own company. I would make sure that day in & day out that I had something to do or people to see even when it wasn't apart of my plans. Fortunately I have learned over the years that stillness is not bad at all. Being still has allowed me to center myself & sit still with some ideas that I might be unsure of or just be able to sit & decompress from the "on the go" life that I have.
I took this unfortunate situation with my foot & turned it into a great opportunity to rest, recharge, & look inward for what I needed to do to move forward. I truly enjoyed just being still & enjoying the presence of me and all that the Creator (God) has placed in & around my life.
So my question to you all: When was the last time you sat still & enjoyed your own presence?
If it has been a long time or you just can't remember then you are long over due. There is no better time to do this than now! Being still & enjoying your own presence is not something that is a selfish thing to do, it is a necessary thing to do! When you take the time to be still & reflect/check in with yourself, you are allowing yourself to step away (even if it is just for an 1 hr or 1 day) from anything that has you taking time away from your main priority which is YOU. You can do several things to access your stillness. You can do something as simple as listen to some music that you love, drink some of your favorite tea while sitting within nature, write in your journal, or meditate. Here is a wonderful resource that my great friend, Tendai Murray-Browne, founder of The Usisi Circle gives of ways in which you can show yourself love. http://theusisicircle.org/3/post/2013/09/sista-selfie-time-15-things-to-do-to-love-yourself.html
I have personally done some if not all of the things listed in this article. Beginning with just some simple self love activities will assist you as you work towards accessing your stillness. I tell once you begin to do all of this for yourself, you will begin to see how much clearer your thoughts are, you will start to experience a feeling of inner peace, & you will begin to learn how to look within yourself for your own energy boost.
Well great people I hope you get the chance to find stillness within yourself. I'm going to continue use my own advice & enjoy how great it feels to just be still! Let me know how your moment or moments of stillness worked for you.
