I’m sure we all have done this & if you haven’t I know you might have thought about it. At the time some of my list consisted of being married to my then boyfriend with 2 children, being a great teacher, a great dancer, an awesome, motivating mentor, live in a nice house like my parents, and I would travel the world.
Now my list didn’t quite turn out exactly how I pictured it. I broke up with my then boyfriend of 5 yrs but I eventually found the love of my life. Then the ball started rolling & I began to get some of the things on my list accomplished. Everything was going just as I planned then all of sudden life started (getting married, having a baby, moving, starting a business, etc.) pulling me away from my list and I quickly became sidetracked. The list eventually got lost! The years went by and I forgot all about it. Then it happened...My 30th Birthday!!
As fast as I created that list is as fast as my birthday came up. I began to panic! OMG…what have I been doing with my life thus far?!?! I felt like I was running around like a chicken with her head cut off! Then it dawned on me that I could no longer remember the list so how would I know what I did or did not accomplish. In that moment I decided maybe it was time to make a new list. I immediately took out a piece of paper & pen and began writing down what I have done with my life prior to turning 30.
Once I finished the list, I gave it a look over to see what more I wanted to accomplish in moving into my 30’s. This is when I had my “Ah Ha” moment! This whole time I had been accomplishing everything I wanted to accomplish without having to rely on a list to tell me if I was wrong or right. I realize now that when I had the original list, I became so fixated on making those things come to life. I forced things to happen in my life instead of it happening naturally because I was afraid of not accomplishing & succeeding in what I set out for myself. I forced a relationship to last longer than it should because I wanted to be married by 30. I pursued a career choice that wasn’t my passion but was close to what I wrote on my list. I quickly realized that I had accomplished what I wanted to accomplish but it all happened as soon as I let go & let life show me what was for me.
Looking back on it now, the list wasn’t a bad idea. The way I used the list to dictate my life was something I needed to question. Now as I move forward into my 30’s, I will be creating a new list. This list I’m going to call my LIFE LIST. What is going to make this list different from the list I made in my 20’s??? Well on this list I will be more specific in what I want to do & see happen in my life. I will choose not to get so stuck on accomplishing everything before a certain age or time. As one of my mentors has said to me before, “Life is to be lived!” This is exactly what I intend to do. This new list will be not be limited. I’m going included the things I’m working towards now & things that I would like to see myself & my family do in the future. At the end of the day I have to remember that if I don’t accomplish all of what I set out to do on my list then it’s not the end of the world! Your list will be ever growing & changing with each passing year. Life is consistently moving & you will have many opportunities in life to see your goals & dreams come true if that is something that you want to see happen.
I hope you will join me while I create my Life List! Below is an example some things that I have on my Life List. Think about your passion for life, the things you love most, & get to it! Happy Writing Everyone!!!
